The Hanging Man

Winner of the 2003 TMA Award for Best Design

Presented and produced in association with Pomegranate Arts. A co-production with the West Yorkshire Playhouse (now Leeds Playhouse), Wexner Center for the Arts (with support from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation), the Walker Art Center (through a grant from The Rockefeller Foundation’s Multi-Arts Production Fund), with additional support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Lyric Hammersmith, and Weiner Festwochen.

There’s the framework of a cathedral. Just the skeleton really. In amongst the beams, ropes and pillars move the actors. All the same but not the same. Medieval and modern. Soon they get to telling the story. The same one they always tell. The story of The Hanging Man. They don’t know all of it. Some bits they make up to make it sound better than it was. Some bits they are not sure about but they believe them to be true, sometimes things might get just a bit personal.

The Hanging Man was first presented at West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Lyric, Hammersmith, in 2003.
